Director Software Engineering
POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT
Reporting to the CEO, the Software Engineering Director will support the expansion of Surfline's products and services. This person will play an integral part in leading the design and development efforts for a product group, including extending and developing existing and new products across web, mobile, apps, and CTV platforms. The Software Engineering Director is technically creative and innovative, yet practical and focused in order to drive delivery. The Software Engineering Director will be solely responsible for development and design, and work will work closely with our Product Manager to meet business unit objectives and the VP of Technology who is responsible for architecture and infrastructure.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
o Research and deliver practical applications of technology advancements to develop the engineering team.
o Build, train, manage and develop a team of strong full-stack engineers.
o Ensure the team delivers high quality products at an ever-evolving velocity.
o Support full software development life cycle at a high level, including analyzing requirements, system architecture, documentation and testing of new developments as well as enhancements to existing software.
o Ensure all programming, design, scalability, production control, security, data validation and quality control best practices are met by the engineering team.
o Troubleshoot critical software issues and prioritize work to aid the development teams.
o Lead the implementation of Best Practices in Source Code Management: Branching, Tagging, Triggers, Hooks, etc.
o Act as a leader and advocate of technology management and training to staff.
o Manage automating testing, including unit tests, system tests and regression tests.
o Manage the agile development process.
o Be the advocate of engineering best practices to the team.
o Act as a Technology liaison with all of the non-technical teams.

o Directly manage the engineering team
o Provide coaching, direction, motivation as well as develop and empower direct reports
o Ensure work flow and processes are to maximum efficiency for business necessity
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
o Interacts with all levels throughout organization including employees and outside vendors
MINIMUM
Qualifications:
EDUCATION/
Experience:
o 5
years of experience leading analysis and design; requirements gathering and service-oriented modeling.
o 5
years of experience in object-oriented analysis, design patterns and software engineering.
o 5
years managing a team of software developers; including recruitment, training and performance reviews.
o Exceptional coding skills in one of the following: Java, PHP, Python, Cold Fusion, Perl or Node.js
o Experience managing in an Agile/Scrum environment preferred
o Strong leadership, organizational, management and communication skills a must.
o Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field preferred and/or equivalent work experience
o Solid understanding of relational database concepts, data warehousing, and database architecture and design.
o Expert in XHTML, CSS, jQuery (not just plugins)
o Strong experience with JavaScript frameworks (Angular, Backbone, Ember, Node, etc.)
o Strong experience developing applications using RESTful API's
o Expert with source code management tools - subversion and GIT.
o Experience building and managing responsive websites.
o Experience with build and deploy scripts (Grunt.js, Bash, etc.)
o Experience using code profilers, performance analysis tolls and optimizing software for high performance - both front-end and backend.
o Experience managing software engineering in a continuous integration environment.
o Experience with Service Oriented Architecture, network and mobile-device security, and Test-Driven-Development (TDD)
o Experience with 3rd party services integration, including Content Delivery Networks.
o Experience with mobile development projects including iOS and Android applications
o
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS A PLUS:
o Adobe Coldfusion 8+
o Java, PHP, Python, Perl
o Angular.js or Node.js
o NoSQL database (MongoDB, CouchDB)
o Redis or Memcache
